Plastic CLIP/rivets dohickies

Alan what didnt you like about the Lowe's clips???? I just cant justify $5 for a little plastic clip!!!!!:confused:

The only ones my local Lowe's had that came close to working were small with a Phillips screw head for tightening. And they would not tighten up completely, would only hold loosely, no where close to as good as the stock rivets.

Hey guys, found these from Big Bike Parts through DirectLineParts.com $5.35 for 10 There is another size as well.

I believe that these two are the 8mm fasteners, such as used on the front of the belly pan. The smaller (6mm?) ones that go on the majority of the bodywork are the tough ones to find.

10 for $7.99 . I'll get a pack of the low profile "rivets" along with some other stuff I'm ordering and report back.

mwb- I have a pack of each of these and they are used on the ST1300 in various places. The low profile are used in visible areas (like the top of the windshield fairing) and the regular are used in less visible areas (like the inner and lower cowling). I got mine from Honda Direct Line, here are the regular height and here are the low profile.

But... these two rivet types are not all the types of that size used on the ST1300. In looking at the fiche, I have seen 3 (maybe 4?) different part numbers for those rivets, and I believe the differences are the penetrating depth of the rivets. I also recall that one of those rivet types I bought from HDL would fit into the holes but would not 'click' in place the bottom of the lower cowls due to being too short.

Roger, my thoughts exactly. Those smaller ones are 6mm ("M6") and there are a couple different lengths. I have not found a good source, so I spent a few minutes and found that Honda Direct Line offers a pack of the shorter of the M6 rivets here.

But...there are at least 2 part numbers for the M6 clips that I can find at the moment using Ron Ayers Fiche:
90116-MCS-G00 (Push Rivet), used on the lower cowl and windscreen cowl
90116-SP0-003 (Bumper Seal Clip) used at the very top of the inner cowls

If memory serves, those of us with the lower wind deflector kit have one of the lower cowl M6 rivets replaced with yet a different, loger M6 rivet. Mine have a 'faux leather' look to their top surface (not that I care).

Wow, now I'm confused. I think I'll compile a list of all these rivets and make a cheat sheet, with images of their locations.

They arrived today, along with some oil filters and another battery tender that I ordered. The low profile rivets seem to be a perfect replacement for those used on the bottom of the lower cowls.:slv13:

After pulling lower, mid & all rear plastic for a farkle attack a couple weeks ago, I decided upon reassembly to delete the push pin program everywhere I encountered them. So with a blanket on plywood & saw horses I flopped the large mid fairings face down & went at the holes from behind & drilled 2, 1/16" holes either side of the holes in the fastener receivers (for lack of real name) & attached small pieces of 3/8" plastic on the backside of the holes with #4x3/8"countersunk head screws. & drilled 3/32" holes in the center of the backing plastic. Then shot a screw thru & removed it to tap the plastic. It all clinched up much better than the push pins can ever hold it together & much quicker in the future as well. I used black #6 automotive trim screws with a grabber type thread. No pics cause my phone is too old, sorry.

Had to do a little searching to find the link, but these guys might be helpful.
I've never used them, but if I could find the correct part, I'd certainly order from them.

I looked at this site, and if you click on one of the fasteners, you get the specs/measurements of the fastener. Should be pretty easy (tho somewhat tedious) to match them up with the measurements of the OEM part.

As for the clips gathering up road tar, the Stuff Stopper (sold by another member here) does a great job of keeping road debris off my lower tupperware. But then again, I don't ride as far or wide as some of you guys do.

OK whats the secret....those flush pinned plastic clips on the maintenance panel, lower side cowls and front lower cone made me feel just down right stupid.:rocket1: I destroyed about 4 of them in frustration!! Made changing the oil a not fun job....geeze. So what is the easy way to remove them and re-use them. :bow1:
Also, when ordering them over the net, are they really $2-3 each or for the amount needed for the panel. 3 different ones as well!! Whats up with that!!!!????
Try your local car trimmer or auto factors. Much cheaper!
