Plastic CLIP/rivets dohickies

you'll want the M6 Nylon push rivets #2005-6sriv, and the M8 Nylon push rivets 2005-8sriv. They are $5.99 for a pack of 10, and are a better grade nylon (not plastic) so they don't break as often.
Larry:

Thanks very much for that referral, those are EXACTLY the parts I was looking for. The order process at Bold Motorcycle Hardware is very simple, they also have a Canadian site (you get referred to it automatically if you log in from Canada), and the shipping charges are very reasonable.

I entered a draft order just to see. I think the shipping charges are quite substantial. $15.00 to ship something so small and light seems quite substantial.

Is the below what you are seeing Micheal? Or did I enter something incorrectly.

Hi Andrew:

There are two charges, $8.35 for shipping, which I think is reasonable, and $6.73 which I think is for customs brokerage or documentation. I expect that the shipment will clear through without duty or GST (HST in your case), but it does need to be documented.

For you guys ordering the M6 and M8 packets — when you get them can you advise if either will fit in the two upper positions of the upper cowl near the base of the windshield?

The two that are supplied by Honda seem too short to grab anything but the cowl itself. And they rattle around so much I took them out before they became jetsam.

Hi Robert:

I ordered both the M6 and the M8. They look like pretty high quality parts, I am pleased with them.

The M8 aftermarket rivet is, in my opinion, a much better replacement for the similar-size Honda rivets because it lies almost perfectly flat against the surface when it is installed. This makes the M8 ideal for use on the underside of the bike, right behind the front wheel - because it doesn't protrude, it won't suffer rock and dirt damage like the OEM rivet.

But, because the M8 rivet (which has the same shaft diameter as the OEM Honda rivet used in the two upper positions of the upper cowl near the base of the windshield) has a much larger footprint, it won't fit into the recesses for those two rivets. The M6 aftermarket rivet shaft is too thin to use in the two top of dashboard positions, but the M6 is a perfect fit in all the other locations on the ST 1300.

My suggestion to you is that you order a package of 10 of the M8 aftermarket rivets, then scarf two reasonably good looking (not banged up) OEM rivets from either side of the radiator - there are about 6 total in there - or from the bottom of the motorcycle - to use on the top of the dashboard, then replace the two you scarfed with the aftermarket M8 rivets.

Due to the flat surface area of the aftermarket rivet (when installed), you can expect a top speed increase of 0.00036 MPH after adding this farkle. :)

Excellent suggestion, and great pic! And who can't use a little extra speed in the bargian! Although I am tempted to just get a couple of OEM replacement M8s.

Are the six around the radiator or bottom of the bike M6 or M8?

The OEM rivets around the perimeter of the radiator have the shaft diameter (thickness inside the hole) of the M8 aftermarket, but the head diameter (size of what protrudes above the hole) of the M6. They also have the same visual appearance above the hole as the two OEM rivets on the very top of the dashboard.

The aftermarket M6 (pictured above) are a virtually identical replacement in every respect for the two rivets on each of the inside surfaces of the fairing pockets - the rivets that you insert from the inside of the big opening where the top of the front forks are.

FYI-I placed an order at the Bolt website yesterday from the US. I was offered free shipping which may be due to me being a first time shopper. YMMV.
