Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 20??

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014? A short article with responses.

I'm thinkin that the 7 that 'are not' are not 2012's. All 2012's are ABS IIRC???????

I did look up close at the 2012 ABS models.. but confess..i did not check the nonABS units. I was not aware of that but will check on my next visit. I was shocked when he told me MSRP of a 2012 ABS was 18,499 or something close.

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014? A short article with responses.

that depends on what you read ;)

in the current issue of Motorcyclist, they compare the K1300S, ZX-14, and new 'Busa - and call them sport tourers !

(yes insert ROFLMAO here)

K1600's are big fat pigs just like GL and Glides ... sure they handle much better but come on - they are tourers, and very very nice ones at that :)

Ive read the same magazine and agree...are you kidding me? came to my mind. Ive seen Bandits, ZX10-11s, and Blackbirdswith GIVI bags...but cant see myself sport tiuring on those.

Talked to a dealer and although he has no concrete information he says he has heard rumours of a new bike.

Sort of like us. ;)

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014? A short article with responses.

I think that there is a inverted proportional fonction between the machine we are using and travelling. The more we like to travel, and the less we are concerned by the conditions. No ? There is a French young man that crossed the Sahara desert on a mob(49cc's), cintured with tires around the hips and carrying 2 gerrycans.

With our bikes, we can make 10 times the complete tour of the planet.

May be I do not deserve my 1300, which is a fantastic bike ? But my most beautiful travels, I did them on wrecks, in comparison with our ST's.

Perhaps Honda said it best...

He's either in sales mode, heard it from someone other than Honda, or has a source that is in big trouble.
$1 says sales mode LOL.

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014? A short article with responses.

I hadn't seen that story before, Bill. Makes sense tho, just blow up the successful design of the CBR and sling a big six in it.

I've not spent any time on either so really can't comment.

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014? A short article with responses.

When designing the 1800cc Goldwing to replace the 1500, they decided they wanted the new bike to be more sporty than the cruiser-style frame of the 1500. So they took the CBR frame and used it as the foundation to create a totally new bike for the GL1800.

Not quite how it happened. Yes, they decided the next generation 'Wing should be sportier. They didn't start with a CBR frame though. How could they? There's no way you could hang a flat 6 from the frame. Wheelbase is too short, etc. What they did is they took a CBR engineer (IIRC, a head/lead engineer on the CBR600) and put him in charge of the 'Wing effort, with the above handling directive. As noted, they succeeded.

Re: Replacement or Refinement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

When I wrote the short article I though it might stimulate some discussion- but I didn't expect 5,356 views and 129 comments. I dreamed of having the time to write a careful and considered response but job and kid pretty much stuffed that up.

The one issue that is of particular note is whether to use a variant of the VFR engine or not. It's seems that the majority would prefer an updated version of the ST 1300 longitudinally mounted V4 configuration, while a minority favour the use of the VFR power plant.

I think the latter position is disappointing. It would be like someone who loves the BMW RT reading on an RT forum that it would not matter if the boxer twin engine configuration was replaced with a V twin- after all it would still be a twin.

So let?s be clear. I guess what I really want to see is some serious R&D going into refining and upgrading the Honda ST1300, not replacing it with a VFR1200 T (or some other designation indicating more emphasis on touring than is the case with the current VFR1200).

Don?t get me wrong, although I haven?t ridden a VRF myself, I love the looks of the VRF800 and it has outstanding reviews and many loyal fans. The VFR1200 on the other hand is in my thoroughly subjective view one of the ugliest sport tourers on the market and has received mixed reviews at best. But, in any case, a VFR is a VFR- from all accounts a very different bike to the ST.

In view of how much Honda improved the ST when upgrading the ST1100 to the ST1300 :bow1:, it?s not hard to imagine just how much better the next generation ST (1400?) might be. I very much hope this is what they do. Of course, commerical realities in the midst of the deepest crisis of the world capitalist economy since the 1930s may prevent this from happening.:(

If they do decide to discontinue the ST line and just modify the VFR, there will be many loyal ST owners who will respond by happily holding on to their existing bikes. I?ll look forward to continuing sharing the joys of ST riding with you folks :), and bid farewell to those VFR bound...

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014? A short article with responses.

Hello all. I hope this thread is not dead yet! I have been tracking the "new" Canadian Honda models on their Powersports website, and they were "unveiled" earlier this AM. The ST1300 still shows up, but as a 2010/2012 model, under the "Touring" category. The "Sport Touring" category seems to be gone from the website. No sign of a VFR1200T either (for the moment at least. The new Gold Wing F6B looks like a portly version of one of the Victory models and just does not appeal to me at all. So, as Ruckus puts it so well above, I will be sticking with my ST1300 for a long time now, but will keep my eye open for a nice used model as time goes on. Cheers to all.

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014? A short article with responses.

I think the F6B is awesome... and it's been in the works for sometime now. There is a company that's been doing these one-off's for a while now, and I think Ma Honda has been losing out on a market. I wish they would have tweaked the engine a bit, and hope it comes with ABS... but hey... can't have everything.

The CB1100 has been a huge mystery as to why so long waiting to bring it... this may be my next bike in the garage. :D

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014? A short article with responses.

IMO the only bike uglier than the F6B is a Victory Vision.

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014? A short article with responses.

I must admit, I just don't get the attraction of the CB1100. Not at all.

Different strokes...I love it. There was a version with a fly screen making the rounds on the net early this year that looked even better. Over at Triumph there's a whole range of neo-retro bikes with parallel twins, now Honda's offering their take on the genre with a bike that looks 1970 but has a modern mill, suspension, brakes and electronics. The CB750 was the bike I'd have gotten in the era when bikes were not allowed for young Bones. No money in the budget for a CB1100 right now, but it's on the dream list. YMMV

I like the choices in Honda's 500cc range, too. And I really need a Trophy as I'm not holding my breath for a new ST.

(I need a long lost rich uncle to remember me in his will....)

You will be one rad grandpa tooling around on your F6B. Everyone had better lock their doors and watch their women ;-)

The F6B looks like a Road Glide.

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014? A short article with responses.

I think the "Wing" will sell to to wannabes who want the thug "biker" look (who Honda appears to be gunning for) but want something nicer than a Harley or are fed up. I test road a few of Harleys and the Road Glide was my favorite. However not in the looks department.

How bout a sport inspired Wing?

Like the 1100 too. The RD350 was the bike of choice when I was in high school.
