I'm surprised the picture of the spare final drive in my saddle bag at LDDave's December BBQ RTE hasn't shown up on this site yet. I was certain it would. :)
You had it covered up and put away so fast there wasn't time for a picture!! LOL!!

We try to be a nice bunch here....

Then we'd have to post the usual winter pictures of green puddles beneath the STs... ;)
And that's why... :rofl1:

Yes... Charlie was like a Vegas card dealer when he pulled that thing out and back into the bag.. :rofl1:

What I thought was funny was he had 2 gps devices w/2 xm antennas and tons of added farkle buttons and he didn't know what the factory radio buttons did.. :rofl1: I still wanna know what the TON button does.

I liked the GS mirrors though, they look like they belong.

I was asked to pose for a picture, and I obliged ... so there's at least one pic floating around out there.

Damn the comfort, it's overrated anyway!! I want this one!

Looks like a good progression for long time ST riders over to BMW ... the way those exhausts are routed, it should provide the expected warmth around the seat area that is missing from most R bikes in comparison. :p

Your Honda bias is showing :D. I currently own 3 ST's (actually have "ST" in the name) and only one of them is a Honda .:bow1:

F800ST, ST1050, and ST1300 ;). For my purposes and enjoyment I rank the Honda in the top 3 .

Long time Rider of many BMW's (1973 - 2005) and everything else too.
Why can my 05 FJR1300 run very reliablity without having Final Drive, stalling, immobilizer or clutch issues and BMW bikes can't? The Asian manufacturers figured it out, why can't BMW?

I don't know who has their head in the sand more, HD or BMW?

I am looking at adding another new bike.. Looks like a 2010 new Concours14, ST1300 or FJR1300 since BMW cannot figure it out.
I love the look of BMW and the way everything fits together so well but until their quality control issues come under control and they fix the BIG Problems no BMW will reside again in my garage.

Cool story. I wouldn't mind a K bike to go along with my RT.

Hi guys, haven't been here for a while since I sold the Pan 1300.

In that time I first moved to a BMW K1200GT SE to replace the Pan after nearly 30K miles in 2 years. Enjoyed it. Faster, lighter, good handling, comfortable, lots of factory farkles and did I mention faster. Provided a lot of fun on our European trips (mainly Austria and Spain).

Trouble was it was too fast too easy so decided lifestyle change and bought R1200GS Adventure, my first boxer. This was so much fun around the back roads and country lanes where we live. I even managed to handle this very tall bike with 30+litres of fuel reasonably well. Was great around the alpine passes but as a long distance 2 person machine it failed. Pillion comfort and protection from elements was poor so it had to go. (I would consider one as a solo touring bike).

So back to a "proper" touring machine and we changed to an R1200RT SE some 6 months ago. It hasn't done a real tour yet but it seems to fit the bill well with both passenger and pillion comforts. It handles well and is remarkably fuel efficient if kept around 90mph cruising. We'll see if this is a keeper.

Going back to when the Adventure was to be swopped there were a few options. Back to a Pan 1300, FJR 1300, GTR 1400, K1300GT or the R1200RT.

Simply looking at all these bikes (and to be honest most would do at least a reasonable job) from a ?? / $$ point of view the RT was a no brainer.
In UK money:
Pan1300 ?12,600
FJR1300 ?12,995
GTR1400 ?12,700
K1300GT ?12,900
R1200RT-SE ?10,600

So the RT was not only around ?2K less expensive but had ESA, heated grips and seats, computer, cruise control, etc., etc. making it a bargain.

The very latest model is ?11,800 and with cruise, ESA, heated bits, etc will push the price to around ?13,300 but still a great buy when you consider the cost of adding these to any of the other bikes.

Only other thing I must mention is that at my age (3 score years plus) the lighter weight of the RT is of real benefit.

Enjoy whatever you buy and ride safe.

Redeye, your sig states that you owned a Varadero? Would you care to compare it to the GS please?
Jeff
If you want an "off-road style" touring machine then I can easily recommend the Varadero XL1000V (after 04 with fuel inj and 6 speed box). I travelled around Europe as far east as Gdansk in Poland to the south of Spain and it is a very comfy tourer both solo and 2-up. It is not an off-road machine and is tall and a little top-heavy but is a typical bullet-proof Honda with a nice engine.

The GS is lighter and nimbler and will do some sensible off-road for the average rider. It's a comfortable solo but does not have the comfort for a pillion (Adventure model - not ridden a standard GS). Plus has the big 33 litre tank which would give us around 240-280 miles. Varadero will do around the 190-200 miles to tank. Bridgestone 020's seemed to work well as did Michelin RoadPilots although I stayed with Tourances.

The Adventure (not std GS) has horrible spoked wheels which I replaced with std GS alloys.

I've alway wanted Honda to replace current Varadero with a lighter weight model but the only thing I've heard are rumour that the new VFR1200 is also the basis for the replacement ST1300 AND a new Varadero, so we'll have to wait and see.

Hope this helps.

OK, since you guys are a wealth of BMW knowledge, let me tap into those big brains,,how do you guys like the R1200CLC models? I know they are under powered a bit (61hp) I don't ride 2 up, they seem set up well for long distance riding. I'm not looking for a rocket, but a MC that will get me there and back in comfort, and still have some balls! The LT models seem too big unless your riding 2 up a lot, like the wing. I'm looking for a good all around MC that I can take around town, but be able to hit the road as well. I had a ST1300, and it was very nice, but I do like the looks of the BMW's. I know the maintenence is a bit more for the BMW's as opposed to the Hondas, Kawa, Yam, bikes, but I know guys that have put thousands of carefree miles on their Bimmers. I really don't want to buy new, as there are lots of low mileage used BMW's out there. The R1150RT, R1200RT, and R1200CLC are the three MC's I'm looking at. Problem is I have found a very sweet 04' 1150RT for $8K, with only 10K miles on it, and a 03' 1200CLC for $7.5K with only 4800miles on it, but all of the 1200RT's are over $15K, so I might settle for a little less MC if its half the price. I respect your opinions and input on these MC's. S2000-DAVE
